This month we interviewed Alumnus Dr. Ajay Kumar Koli. He is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the SARA Institute of Data Science, located in Sonipat, Haryana in India.
Dr. Koli, can you describe your Institute so that also non professionals will understand?
SARA Institute is a non-profit that makes data science education free and accessible to everyone, helping people use data to solve problems and make better decisions.
When was it founded and why?
SARA Institute was founded in April 2023 with the mission to democratize data science education. The institute aims to empower individuals with data science skills to drive posi- tive societal changes, addressing real-world challenges and promoting equitable outcomes through responsible data use.
What fascinates you about your subject?
What fascinates me about data science is its ability to transform raw data into meaningful insights that can drive positive change in society. Data science allows us to uncover hidden patterns, solve complex problems, and make informed decisions that can improve various aspects of life, from healthcare and education to environmental sustainability. The inter- disciplinary nature of data science, combining statistics, computer science, and domain knowledge, offers endless opportunities for innovation and discovery. How do you see the role of India within the Data Science area in the future?
India will be a global leader in data science, driven by its vast talent pool, technological advancements, government initiatives, and a thriving startup ecosystem.
What is your best memory of your time in Würzburg?
My best memory of my time in Würzburg is the incredible support I received from fellow PhD students, Prof. Margit Meyer, and Prof. Stephan Schröder-Köhne in arranging focus group interviews. Their help was invaluable and made my research experience both produc- tive and enjoyable.
