11.03.2025Pawan Kumar completed his Bachelor's in Space Science in 2020 at the Institute of Space Technology, Pakistan, and earned a Master's in Satellite Technology from the University of Würzburg in early 2024. Now pursuing a PhD at Würzburg, he specializes in designing weather-resistant sensor systems for Arctic monitoring as part of the Informatics Department's Embedded Sensors and Systems for Earth Observation group.
What did you study? In which field did you earn your PhD?
I completed my Bachelor’s in Space Science in 2020 at the Institute of Space Technology, Pakistan. Later, I earned my Master’s in Satellite Technology from the University of Würzburg, graduating in early 2024. Now, I’m knee-deep in research at Würzburg, working in the Informatics Department under the Chair of Embedded Sensors and Systems for Earth Observation. My PhD focuses on designing weather-resistant sensor systems to monitor Arctic environments—because while we can’t stop the weather completely, we can at least predict it better!
What did you enjoy most about your studies/PhD?
The best part? Working in an international research environment! I got to collaborate with brilliant minds, travel, and experience different cultures. It wasn’t just about the tech (though that was pretty awesome too); it was about building connections, solving problems, and learning to work as a team.
What are you currently doing?
I’m a Research Assistant at the University of Würzburg, specializing in embedded sensor systems for Earth observation. A big part of my work revolves around the UWE-5 nanosatellite project, Würzburg’s latest experimental satellite, where I contribute to system design and development..
Besides research, I also juggle project management and teaching, guiding students through the complexities of satellite technology and sensor systems. Basically, I wear multiple hats—but thankfully, none of them require a spacesuit (yet)!
What key milestones in your career would you highlight?
Some of the highlights so far:
- Completing my Master’s at the University of Würzburg, where I gained hands-on experience in satellite design.
- Working on the UWE-5 nanosatellite project—because launching things into space never gets old!
- Diving into project management and teaching, because what’s the point of knowledge if you don’t share it?
How has Uni Würzburg prepared you for your profession?
Uni Würzburg has been a game-changer. The technical expertise I’ve gained is directly applicable to satellite development and Earth observation. More importantly, working in a diverse research environment sharpened my teamwork, project management, and problem-solving skills—all of which are just as useful for daily life as they are for meeting deadlines!
