On this page you will find background information on the days of action and on events that take place within their framework. In addition, the team of the University Women's Representative will be live onInstagram Kanal der Universität Würzburg @uniwuerzburg from 07 - 09 March 2023 with many insights and information.
International Women's Day
Every year on March 8, the "International Women's Day” takes place. For over 100 years, this day has been used to draw attention to women's rights, existing discrimination, and gender equality issues worldwide. On this day, milestones of the women's rights movements are remembered, but also the existing inequalities and discrimination worldwide are looked at. Violence against Women or women's reproductive rights require global attention. Structural inequalities and discrimination are also evident in the situation of women in education, the workplace, and politics. The aim of International Women's Day is to strongly encourage people to stand up for women's rights and equal opportunities.
This year's globally proclaimed theme for International Women's Day is "Embrace Equity." More information can be found on the International Women´s Day Website.
This year's motto of United Nations Women Germany again focuses on the theme "Living Feminist Utopias. Together for a just world." The feminist utopia describes an (ideal) vision of a just world, free of sexism, racism, ableism, classism, ageism, and other forms of oppression. Further information can be found on the website of UN Women Germany.
Equal Pay Day
Equal Pay Day on March 7 aims to draw attention to the fact that women worldwide earn less than men. This inequality is measured by the percentage difference in the average gross earnings of women and men. According to the Federal Statistical Office and the BMFSFJ, the pay gap between women and men in Germany is 18 percent. This difference is also referred to as the gender pay gap.
The motto of this year's Equal Pay Day is "the art of equal pay." More information can be found on Germany's Equal Pay Day campaign website.
Equal Care Day
On March 1, Equal Care Day draws attention to the importance of care work, i.e. the work of looking after, caring for and providing for others. Care work affects us all. Nevertheless, over four times more women than men are professionally engaged in care work, mostly in the low-wage sector. Moreover, a large share of care work also takes place in private and often remains invisible there. This care work is also traditionally done by women. All these women can therefore be more affected by poverty in old age. Further information on the topic of care work can be found on the website of the Federal Agency for Civic Education.
"Become louder together" is the motto of Equal Care Day 2023 - the day of action for more appreciation, visibility, and a fair distribution of care work. Further information can be found on the campaign website of Nations Women Germany.
