International Day against Violence against Women
As early as 1999, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution designating November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, also known as the "International Day against Violence against Women". At that time, the General Assembly expressed "concern that women do not enjoy the full enjoyment of their human rights and fundamental freedoms, and concern at the continuing failure to protect and promote those rights and freedoms in cases of violence against women".
In 2022, the International Day of Remembrance will continue to draw public attention to violence against women, as the situation for women remains dramatic:
The BMFSFJ reports for Germany: "In Germany, every third woman is a victim of physical and/or sexual violence at least once in her life; about every fourth woman is a victim of physical or sexual violence at least once by her current or by her former partner."
The World Health Organisation (WHO) kcomes to a similar conclusion in a study for the world population: one in three women - about 736 million women worldwide - experience violence by a partner or sexual assault outside the relationship at some point in their lives. The vast majority, 641 million women, experience violence in marriage or partnership.
Gender equality work is a building block in the effort to enable as many women as possible to lead a life free of violence. Even if in Germany the focus is generally on measures to promote careers and improve the gender pay gap or pension gap, etc., the commitment to equality at university and in society does even more: attacks on women would decrease if there were more equality, more educational opportunities, and secure jobs, according to the WHO. The authorities must also ensure that discriminatory prejudices based on gender stereotypes are eliminated. (See study above).
Action Month: Würzburg says NO to Violence against Women
Würzburg joins this call and says NO to violence against women. With this slogan, we want to send a strong signal against violence, especially domestic violence.
To this end, there will again be events around the International Day against Violence against Women this year.
