Project 6
Determining the role of sphingomyelinases in S. aureus phagocytosis
Martin Fraunholz, Christian Stigloher
We investigate two major aspects of host sphingolipids during infection with the Gram-positive pathogen Staphylococcus aureus:
i) the involvement of host sphingolipids in S. aureus uptake by mammalian cells and its connection to cytotoxicity.
ii) the analysis of S. aureus virulence in a C. elegans infection model with a focus on the role of sphingolipids by genetics and advanced imaging techniqes, such as correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM).
