Othering and the Reception of Minority Music

In this course, we will analyze the role of minority music and its reception in society at large. By outlining what the concept of minorities can encompass, we will also explore how this concept is shaped in relation to the majority. Using ethnomusicological research on specific situations as a starting point, we will see how power imbalances can contribute to the perception of minorities as the "other" and influence the ways in which music is practiced and transmitted. Using a variety of audio-visual ethnographic materials, we will explore the diversity of minority musical practices, but also analyze how the process of "othering" affects them. Students will be able to analyze how this process can either keep minority musical practices hidden or unrecognized, or lead to their stereotyping or perception as homogeneous.
