FAQ PROMOS
Despite our info sessions and website, there are always repeated questions that we have collected for you here to assist you further. If you can't find your question in the list, please don't hesitate to contact us.
PROMOS is a merit-based scholarship. The distribution is based on specific criteria such as grades, references letter, language skills, and motivation. Each applicant receives a score for their application. Depending on the available budget, award groups are created for the current year. If one falls into a specific group based on the submitted documentation, they receive a corresponding scholarship. Remaining funds are distributed accordingly.
This means that it doesn’t matter whether one is at the same location at the same time. PROMOS works differently than Erasmus. The entitlement is individually based on the application and its evaluation. Therefore, the conditions are not exactly the same, and unfortunately, not everyone can be offered the same scholarship or the same increase.
Financial need is also irrelevant. PROMOS is solely based on academic performance. The stay abroad should not depend on PROMOS funding. It only serves as financial support.
A comparison between scholars is not recommended due to the aforementioned explanation.
PROMOS is based on very good/good academic standing. The better your grades, academic reference and motivation, the better your application evaluation. Therefore, an application is recommended if you have very good or good grades on all subjects.
In principle, PROMOS scholarships at JMU can be combined consecutively; however, the total funding period within one phase of study (Bachelor’s, Master’s, Diploma, Magister, State Examination, etc.) must not exceed 6 months. Additionally, only one scholarship is generally allowed per funding line (study, internship, specialized course). Currently, due to a limited budget, we will not accept multiple applications for the same purpose, e.g. several internships in one phase of study.
Within a new phase of study, you may receive another scholarship through PROMOS, even for funding lines in which you have already received a scholarship during the previous phase of study.
Yes. All PROMOS scholarships must be reported to the responsible BAföG office and may potentially lead to adjustments in BAföG rates. When applying for PROMOS, also let us know that you are planning to apply for BAföG.
If you are completing a stay abroad where the study/working language is GERMAN, we do not require proof of language proficiency. However, we do need a brief confirmation from the internship provider stating that the working language is indeed German. Proven knowledge of the respective local language will be positively considered in the selection process.
PROMOS scholars are required to notify JMU Würzburg in WRITING and WITHOUT DELAY of any changes in circumstances that are relevant to the granting and amount of the scholarship. If important reasons arise, the contract will be terminated, the scholarship payments will be discontinued, and any improperly received scholarship payments will be reclaimed by JMU Würzburg.
An important reason exists in particular if:
- The purpose of the scholarship can no longer be achieved.
- Facts indicate that the student is not making the necessary and reasonable efforts to fulfill the purpose of the scholarship.
- The scholarship was obtained through fraudulent deception (e.g., by concealing simultaneous funding from other sources).
- The funds are not being used for their intended purpose, and the student was aware of this or was only unaware due to gross negligence.
- The student unilaterally terminates the contract without a justifiable reason. (A justifiable reason would be, for example, a long-term illness of the student or a deterioration in the security situation in the host country.)
