To prepare you for a leadership position in or outside academia, the University of Würzburg offers you the opportunity to complete a modular leadership training programme and earn the JMU Leadership Certificate..
Goals
By completing the Leadership Certificate ...
We offer thorough training that is tailored to your specific needs and will equip you with valuable knowledge and skills to take to your leadership position or will prepare you for a future leadership role in or outside academia. In our courses, you will become familiar with different leadership contexts and will build up a repertoire of actions that will allow you to effectively shape your area of responsibility.
The training programme will help you identify your strengths as well as areas of development as a (future) holder of a leadership position and develop your personal leadership style. You will receive input on how you can be authentic and flexible in your leadership role.
You can use the certificate to demonstrate your leadership experience and skills when you apply for positions. It makes skills and knowledge visible that are required for leadership roles.
The certificate also aims to strengthen the leadership culture at JMU by further promoting the professionalisation of holders of leadership roles and engaging in dialogue with each other about what constitutes good leadership.
Target group
The programme is aimed at all JMU researchers who are interested in enhancing their leadership skills.
You can complete the Leadership Certificate in order to prepare for a future leadership role: This means that you can start pursuing the certificate even if you have no or little leadership experience and are not in a leadership position yet.
If you already have leadership experience and currently have leadership responsibility, you can use the programme to reflect on your current leadership behaviour and develop it further. To this end, we offer specific courses exclusively for staff members with experience in leadership roles.
Structure of the certificate
The Leadership Certificate consists of a total of 60 units of study (1 unit ≈ 45 minutes), which are divided into mandatory and elective courses.
Researchers who have already completed their doctorate can complete the advanced level of the Leadership Certificate, which consists of a total of 90 units of study.
The Leadership Certificate programme is divided into four stages, which should be completed one after the other whenever possible.
In the kick-off workshop, we bring together academics (professors, postdocs and doctoral students from the 3rd year of their doctorate) who are currently interested in completing the Leadership Certificate. It will explain the next steps in the process and will provide assistance on how to tailor the programme to your goals and needs. In addition, we will show you how to complete the ‘clarification of motivation and goals’ form (‘Anlass- und Zielklärung’). You will have to upload this document to the WueCampus portal. Once you have done so, you are actively participating in the programme.
For doctoral candidates from the 3rd doctoral year onwards For registration and admission to the kick-off workshop, please send an email to: personalentwicklung@uni-wuerzburg.de
If you are still at the beginning of your doctorate and are interested in our Leadership Certificate, you are welcome to take part in selected events from the elective and compulsory areas of the Leadership Certificate. Official participation in the certificate programme (kick-off workshop, basic workshop, etc.) can then take place from the third year of your doctorate.
Courses for the Leadership Certificate
Basic course "Leading Effectively"
The basic course ‘Leading Effectively’ will give you an overview of the fundamental principles and tools of leadership. This course is a blended learning course that is offered each semester (several times if needed). In order to be able to adequately address target group-specific experiences and needs, we offer a basic course for researchers without leadership responsibility as well as a basic course for researchers with leadership responsibility. We recommend that you take the basic course as the first course in the programme.
Bias Training
The Unconscious Bias Training, which we offer every semester in cooperation with the Gender Equality Academy of the University of Würzburg and as an e-learning course, aims to raise awareness of common gender stereotypes and behavioural clichés in the university context and to show how we can help shape a modern work culture in research.
In the elective area, we offer courses on a range of different topics and in a range of formats to deepen your knowledge and skills in the area of leadership. Depending on the format, the focus will be on developing knowledge, gaining hands-on experience with leadership tools or collegial exchange and self-reflection. In the lectures, practical workshops and seminars, we will address issues such as the selection of new hires, lateral leadership, feedback, the supervision of doctoral researchers, self-management, project management, motivation, change management and many more. You also have the opportunity to expand your knowledge through peer exchange, counselling or e-learning courses in the area of leadership.
Peer exchange
Participants who want to complete the advanced level of the certificate will take part in a peer exchange. This is a structured form of collegial exchange with the aim of learning to understand challenging situations better and developing solutions together. You will meet with a fixed group of people three times at four-week intervals in order to discuss your issues in a solution-oriented manner. The Academic Staff Development team will facilitate these meetings.
Counseling/coaching
In addition, we offer participants who are completing the advanced level the opportunity to attend a personal counselling or coaching session, in which we will work on issues or questions they are facing in their specific circumstances.
In the elective area, you can focus on areas of your choice that you are finding particularly interesting or important. With our consent, courses offered by our internal partners at JMU (ProfiLehre, Conflict Management Services, Graduate Schools, Gender Equality Academy etc.) can also be counted towards the certificate, provided that they clearly relate to the topic of leadership
In order to continuously document and reflect on your learning process, you will prepare your personal portfolio, which will have the following parts: 1. clarification of your motivation and goals; 2. a list of the courses you have taken; 3. reflection sheets on the courses you have taken; 4. your leadership concept. You will receive more information about the exact structure of the portfolio in the kick-off workshop, and we will also let you have a template.
As soon as you have completed the required number of units of study, you can register for a reflection workshop. We will then ask you to upload the list of the courses you have taken and your leadership concept to the WueCampus portal. Please be aware that you will have to do so by about one week prior to the workshop. Together with the other participants pursuing the Leadership Certificate, you will analyse your learning experiences in the reflection workshop and will answer the question of what constitutes good leadership for you.
After the reflection workshop, we will issue you the Leadership Certificate along with a list of all courses and counselling or coaching sessions you have attended (incl. workload).
