With/About Africa: UPSCALE – Climate-friendly Agriculture with Maximum Yield in East Africa

05/02/2024

For years, the University of Würzburg has been a centre for intensive, internationally acclaimed research on Africa and with African partners. One example of this is the research and innovation project UPSCALE.

Prof. Dr. Ingolf Steffan-Dewenter (Department of Animal Ecology and Tropical Biology) and Dr. Michael Thiel (Chair of Remote Sensing) are researching climate-adapted agriculture in East Africa.

In East African countries south of the Sahara, there are often yield gaps in smallholder agriculture that threaten the food security of millions of farmers. This situation is further threatened by extreme drought and advancing climate change. Moreover, conventional farming methods are ecologically costly, unsustainable and often very poorly adapted to low-income agriculture. This is where UPSCALE comes in with its transformative push-pull technology.
