Prof. Dr.med. Jobst Böning, born 31.10.1939 in Steinberg, Pomerania
He had been a specialist in psychiatry and neurology since 1970, a professor and senior consultant at the Psychiatric University Hospital in Würzburg since 1980 and was active in research, teaching and patient care until his retirement in 2005. From 1989 until his retirement, Prof. Böning was a member of the Ethics Committee of the Medical Faculty. He habilitated in 1976 on "Functional age-related changes in the nervous system from an interdisciplinary perspective - a neuro-physiological, biochemical-immunological and geronto-psychiatric synopsis". With a remarkable scientific oeuvre covering the entire breadth of the subject, he also established the Clinical Addiction Medicine Department at the University Hospital in 1990. As coordinator of the BMBF-funded "Interdisciplinary Würzburg Addiction Research Network" (1996 - 2001) on the "Neuro-biological and Behavioral Foundations of Alcohol Dependence", he founded the "Interdisciplinary Center for Addiction Research" at the University (IZSW) in 2000, of which he was Vice President from 1994 - 2003. As founding and later honorary chairman of the "Bavarian Academy for Addiction and Health Issues (BAS)", which has been supported by the Free State of Bavaria since 1997, former president (1998 - 2002) and honorary member of the "German Society for Addiction Research and Addiction Therapy", chairman of the federally funded "German Centre for Addiction Issues" (2002 - 2008) and as a member of the former Drug and Addiction Council, Prof. Böning has remained actively involved in the field of addiction research even after his retirement.
