Schindelin Group

About the Schindelin Group

“Form Follows Function”, a principle of 20th century architecture, summarizes the idea that the shape of a building should reflect its intended purpose. In structural biology the principle is generally inverted, knowledge of the three-dimensional structure of biological macromolecules provides important insights into their functions, i.e. “Function Follows Form”. This insight provides the rational for our research efforts in which we heavily rely on X-ray crystallography, a key technique for the high-resolution structure analysis of soluble as well as membrane proteins of virtually any size, in combination with biochemical, biophysical and cell-based experiments.

Protein Structure and Function

In our studies we focus on two different topics:

(1) Protein folding and maturation in the endoplasmic reticulum as well as the degradation of proteins via the ubiquitin-dependent protein degradation pathway.

(2) Neuronal signal transmission via inhibitory neurotransmitter receptors such as the glycine and GABA(A) receptors as well as anchoring and transport of these receptors.
