WiR im WS 2019/20
The Writer-in-Residence Program brings highly qualified and prominent professional writers to Würzburg for a short creative residency combined with teaching and public speaking events.
Writer in Residence in Wintersemester 2019/20
Anna Winger is the screenwriter of the renowned television series Deutschland '83 and the Netflix series Unorthodox, which will be released in March this year. At the invitation of the Schreibzentrum | Writing Center, she presented her working practice with a focus on processes of writing in the packed hall of the Domschule Würzburg. The more than one hundred guests were welcomed by Dr. Stefan Meyer-Ahlen, Director of Studies Society and Culture at the Domschule Würzburg; American Studies Professor Prof. Dr. MaryAnn Snyder-Körber moderated the event.
First there was film screening, then discussion: After an episode of Deutschland '83, Anna Winger answered questions from Snyder-Körber and the audience. Where can traces of Winger's writing process be found in the previously seen film? What do the production processes of a screenplay look like? How do collaborative working processes work in screenwriting? Can elements of the writing creative industry be made productive for academic writing from seminar papers, bachelor's and master's theses to dissertations? Winger shared her know-how with the participants and provided the auditorium with a lot of input on writing, becoming creative and rethinking one's own writing.
Anna Winger was not only a prominent guest at the public evening event of the Writing Matters series, which the Schreibzentrum | Writing Center JMU held for the first time in cooperation with the Domschule Würzburg. A three-part intensive workshop on scenic writing for theatre and film was also held for the students. The dramaturge Katharina Nay led the workshop and designed a workshop session together with Anna Winger at the university.

Germany in the 80s - a time of extreme political tensions that was both colorful and consumer-friendly. Wall deaths and a double NATO decision dominated the headlines, while the brand new Walkman played songs by Nena and other representatives of the Neue Deutsche Welle. Anna Winger's German-language television series takes you back to this complex time. Her three-part series from Germany 83, Germany 86 and the soon to be broadcast Germany 89 is highly praised by critics.
We look forward to the opportunity to enjoy and discuss a sample of the series with the screenwriter and television maker that evening. What are the possibilities, but also the dangers, of treating history in a television format? Are we experiencing a renaissance of "quality television"? If so, why?

How is a script or a play made? How do they differ and what is a good story or scene?
Sometimes it's a long way from the first idea to the finished book. In addition to Anna Winger's work, the workshop gives an insight into the processes involved in creating a script and the basics of scenic writing.
This offers the opportunity to design your own ideas or texts for stage and film.
With Guest Lecturer Katharina Nay.
