Admission to Programmes with Local Admission Restrictions
Please take the time to read the following sections carefully. They will provide you with IMPORTANT INFORMATION on the application procedure.
Application period
- for winter intake: from around end-May/June to 15 July
- for summer intake: from around end-November to 15 January of the following year
During the respective periods, you will find a link at the bottom of this page that will take you to the application portal.
The application deadlines are preclusive periods. If the last day of the application period is a Saturday, Sunday, or public holiday, the period will not continue to run until the end of the next day that is not a Saturday, Sunday, or public holiday (Article 31 Subarticle 3 Bayerisches Verwaltungsverfahrensgesetz (Bavarian Act on Administrative Proceedings, BayVwVfG)).
Please make sure you keep the following documents ready:
- Certificate of higher education entrance qualification (e. g. Abitur certificate). All applicants for a Bachelor's or Staatsexamen degree program who have NOT obtained their higher education entrance qualification in the German school system in Germany or at a school with German Abitur examination regulations require a preliminary examination documentation (VPD) from uni-assist for their application.
Furthermore you will be required to provide proof of your proficiency in the German language. In this context, please read the information on the required level of German language proficiency (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (German language test for university admission, DSH)).
If you are holding a professional qualification that is granting access to higher education, please bear in mind that you must consult with an advisor before you apply for admission. After this conversation, you will be issued a certificate of qualification that you will have to submit together with your application documents. - Details regarding any service you may have completed (e. g. military service, Zivildienst (alternative service), freiwilliges soziales Jahr (year of voluntary work in the social sector))
- If you have attended university before: details regarding your previous university education
- If your desired degree program participates in DoSV: Your BID and BAN that you received when you registered at hochschulstart.de

1. Registering to the application portal
You must register anew each semester. Registrations from previous semesters are deleted on data protection grounds.
This is the application portal for all programmes with local admission restrictions as well as all programmes taking part in the dialogue-oriented service procedure (DoSV) :
1.1. Programmes with local admission restrictions
You will be required to register to the application portal of the University of Würzburg (see link at the bottom of this page). Once you have done so, you will be sent an email with a link for you to complete the registration process.
(If you do not receive this email, please check your spam folder.)
Please make sure you do not lose your user name and password; you will need these to log in to the application portal of the University of Würzburg.
1.2. Dialogue-oriented service procedure (DoSV)
If you would like to apply for admission to a degree programme that is taking part in the dialogue-oriented service procedure, you will have to register at hochschulstart.de first (hochschulstart.de will assign you a Bewerberidentifikationsnummer (applicant identification number, BID) and a Bewerberauthorisierungsnummer (applicant authentication number, BAN); please make sure you make a note of these).
After you have registered at hochschulstart.de, you will have to register to the application portal of the University of Würzburg (you will be required to enter your BID and BAN numbers).
(Do make sure you make a note of your user name and password!)
2. Submitting your application
Once the registration process has been completed, you will be able to select a degree programme, enter the remaining details, and submit your application.
Please note: You may not submit to the University of Würzburg more than one application for admission to the first subject semester and/or one application for admission to a higher subject semester in a degree programme with local admission restrictions. If the University of Würzburg has more than one ‘valid’ application for admission to the first subject semester on file for you, only the most recent one will take part in the admission procedure.
Please note: At the University of Würzburg you may
- Up to twelve applications for study courses in the DoSV,
- in addition, an application as a first-year student in a non-DoSV study programme and
- an application for continuation of studies
to give.
You can find out which courses of study are covered by the DoSV here
If you would like to apply for admission to medicine, clinical stage, please bear in mind that in the clinical stage, the subject semester count restarts from one.
3. Required documents
Usually, you will not be required to submit any documents together with your application. Your application will be processed on the basis of the details you entered online. Therefore, please make sure, before submitting your application, that the information you entered is correct. Any incorrect information may lead to an offer of admission being withdrawn. A subsequent correction is also no longer possible.
However, there are certain groups of applicants that will be required to submit documents together with their application. These applicants will find a pdf-version of their application available for download. This will contain information on whether and what documents they will be required to submit.
Please note: Should you be required to upload documents, you must do so
- by 15 July (24:00 p.m.) at the latest for winter intake or
- by 15 January (24:00 p.m.) at the latest for summer intake.
These are receipt deadlines (preclusive period).
If the University does not receive your application before the expiry of the prescribed deadline, your application will not be able to take part in the admission procedure.
4. Checking the status of your application
To check the status of your application or edit your personal details, please log in to your account at the application portal of the University of Würzburg. If you have applied for admission to a programme that is taking part in the dialogue-oriented service procedure, you must log in to your account at hochschulstart.de to edit your personal details.
Whenever changes occur with regard to (the status of) your application (e. g. when your application was processed, accepted, or rejected), you will receive an email asking you to log in to your account. (List of statuses)
5. Applying for admission to programmes taking part in the dialogue-oriented service procedure: what are the next steps?
During the application phase, you may rank your applications in the hochschulstart.de portal according to your preference, i. e. specify which university offering a particular programme would be your first/second/... choice.
You will have to actively accept or reject an offer of admission within a specific deadline. Please read the relevant information that is available on the hochschulstart.de website carefully.
6. Letters of admission, rejection, or exclusion
If you were offered admission/were admitted to university, you will be able to access and save your letter of admission on the application portal of the University of Würzburg. Your letter of admission will explain the next steps in the enrolment process and will let you know what documents you will be required to submit.
Please note that you must enrol within the deadline specified in your letter of admission.
If your application was rejected or excluded, you will also be able to access the respective letters on the application portal.
>>> You will not be sent a paper copy of your letter of admission or rejection in the post.
The above is not true for programmes taking part in the dialogue-oriented service procedure. If you have applied for admission to one of these programmes and your application was rejected or excluded, you will be able to access the respective letter on the portal at hochschulstart.de.
If you are applying for admission to a higher subject semester, please note:
Letters of admission or rejection will not be sent out earlier than mid-September/mid-March. Whether and when places become available is outside the control of the University of Würzburg. The admission procedure might, therefore, extend into the lecture period. If you have not received a letter of rejection, there is still a chance that you will be offered admission. Letters of rejection will not be issued until it becomes foreseeable that no more places will become available.
7. Clearing (only for programmes that are not taking part in the dialogue-oriented service procedure)
Applicants who were not made an offer of admission in the main procedure will automatically take part (please do not call to enquire) in clearing if and when places become available.

Implementation of the Hochschulzulassungsverordnung (Directive on the Admission to Universities, HZV) requires the University of Würzburg to collect the data which is collected in the online application form. Completing the fields marked ‘*’ (‘required’) is mandatory; applicants who do not do so will not be able to participate in the online application procedure. The obligation to provide the respective information arises from Article 87 Subarticle 2 Bayerisches Hochschulinnovationsgesetz (Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act, BayHIG). The fields not marked ‘*’ (‘required’) should be completed if the applicant is in a position to provide the information in question.
The applicant's personal data will be processed in accordance with the provisions laid down in the Bayerisches Datenschutzgesetz (Bavarian Data Protection Act, BayDSG) as amended from time to time.
If the applicant is admitted to University, the data held will be transferred to the student management system for the purpose of effecting enrolment.
Irrespective thereof, all of the applicant's data will be deleted from the admissions system after one semester. Data submitted by applicants who participated in the online application procedure but failed to submit the official application documents to the University within the application deadline will be deleted immediately after expiry of the application deadline.
All documents submitted by the applicant will be shredded six months after the allocation procedure was completed.
I consent to information on the status of my application for admission (e. g. in the case of my application having been accepted or rejected) being sent to my private email address which I will specify in my application documents (Article 3a Bayerisches Verwaltungsverfahrensgesetz (Bavarian Act on Administrative Proceedings, BayVwVfG)).
This email will contain a link under which, after personal login with my user name and password, I will be able to view my letter of admission or rejection and print this letter for my records. I will no longer have access to my letter of admission or rejection once the admission procedure has ended.
You are strongly recommended to print out your letter of admission or rejection for your records (e. g. for filing with other universities or the child benefit office). The University of Würzburg will not be able to print out your letter of admission or rejection at a later date.
I confirm that I have read the above important information and notices, in particular on data protection.
