Programmes With Local Admission Restrictions

Applying for admission to the first subject semester via the web portal of the University of Würzburg.

Admission to restricted admission degree programmes is governed by
the

Verordnung über die Hochschulzulassung an den staatlichen Hochschulen in Bayern

(Directive on Admission to State Universities in Bavaria, HZV) and the JMU Bylaws on Admission as amended from time to time.

List of restricted admission degree programmes

Applications for admission must be submitted via the University’s web portal WueStudy. Any and all documents applicants will need to submit to the University in paper form must have been received by the University prior to the prescribed deadline.

In a main procedure, university places will be allocated in the order described below. Applicants who were made an offer of admission will be set a deadline by which they can accept the offer and enrol in the programme in question.

Clearing:
Any places that may remain untaken after the main procedure has been completed will be allocated through clearing. All applicants who were not made an offer in the main procedure will take part in clearing.
Clearing will close as soon as all places have been taken or there are no more applications for admission on file that were submitted in time and due form, but no later than four weeks after the lecture period has started.

Admissions lottery:
If and when places remain available after clearing has closed, these will be allocated among those applicants who submitted an application for participation in the admissions lottery within the prescribed deadlines.

We will not send paper copies of letters of admission or rejection in the post. You will receive an email informing you that the admission procedures have been completed. Please note that you will be obliged to independently inform yourself of whether your application for admission was accepted (to do so, check sb@home) and to print out your letter of admission or rejection.

First, those applicants will be allocated a place that are eligible for preferential admission, i.e. applicants to whom the University of Würzburg offered a place on the degree programme in question in the last round of admissions or the round before that but who were unable to accept that place because they were completing a service (see below).

In a next step, a certain percentage of the remaining places will be reserved for

  • applicants who would suffer undue hardship if their application for admission was rejected (2%),
  • applicants who obtained a subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification by studying in a programme at a university of applied sciences (4%),
  • applicants applying for admission to second degree studies (4%),
  • foreign nationals and stateless persons (5%),
  • applicants who did not obtain a higher education entrance qualification at school but hold a professional qualification that grants access to higher education (3%),
  • top athletes who belong to a squad of a German Olympic Sports Confederation (2%)

and places will be allocated to applicants seeking admission under these separate quotas.

The remaining study places will be allocated from summer semester 2024 in the following way:

  • 30% of places based on the average grade of the applicants’ higher education entrance qualification and
  • 70% of places according to criteria set by the University (Auswahlverfahren der Hochschule, AdH).

If two or more applicants tie, priority for places will be given to those applicants who can furnish documentary evidence to prove that they have completed a full service period or will have completed a full service period by 31 March (if they are applying for summer intake) or, respectively, 30 September (if they are applying for winter intake) or can furnish evidence to prove that, by 31 March/30 September, they will have completed at least six months of that service (information about services).

If there is still a tie between applicants after this criterion has been applied, it will be broken by drawing lots.

More Information about the advance quotas

If you were offered a place on the degree programme in question at the University of Würzburg in the past but were unable to accept that place because you were completing a service, you will be given preferential consideration over all other applicants in the admission procedure. However, your entitlement to preferential admission will become void after the second round of admissions after the end of your service period. If admission restrictions are imposed for a degree programme that used to have unrestricted admission, the above shall also apply, mutatis mutandis, to applicants who were unable to commence studies in that programme before these restrictions were imposed because they were completing a service.

The following types of service will be considered:

  • up to three years of military service or service in the German Border Guard
  • Bundesfreiwilligendienst volunteer service under the Bundesfreiwilligendienstgesetz (Federal Volunteer Service Act, BFDG)
  • Zivildienst (alternative service)
  • freiwilliges soziales/ökologisches Jahr (year of voluntary work in the social or environmental sector)
  • Weltwärts volunteer service
  • Kulturwelt volunteer service
  • International Youth Volunteer Service
  • at least two years of working as a development worker
  • up to three years of providing care for a child or other family member, provided that care was provided full time and the caregiving was comparable to the other types of service listed above in terms of the extent and intensity of involvement

The Berufsvorbereitendes Soziales Jahr (BSJ) orientation year cannot be considered.

  •

You might be able to claim special circumstances. Before filing a claim for special circumstances, please consider carefully whether the claim has reasonable prospect of success.

As a rule, you must submit a claim for special circumstances at the same time as you submit your application for admission.

Extenuating circumstances

As a rule, you must submit an application for extenuating circumstances (Nachteilsausgleich) at the same time as you submit your application for admission.
Extenuating circumstances are personal circumstances beyond an applicant's control that prevented him/her from achieving a better average grade. If your application is accepted, your average grade will be improved. Applicants applying for admission to second degree studies cannot apply for extenuating circumstances.

Claims of hardship

As a rule, you must submit a claim of hardship at the same time as you submit your application for admission.
Two percent of places on each degree programme are reserved for applicants who would suffer undue hardship if their application for admission was rejected. In order for a claim of hardship to be justified, it is necessary that factors exist in your person that would lead to health-related, social or family-related impairment that is so severe that you cannot reasonably be expected to wait for admission. The hardship policy of hochschulstart.de in Dortmund shall apply mutatis mutandis.

Applicants have the opportunity to transfer to a university earlyest after two semesters of studying at the UIniversity of Applied Sciences. You can find further information hier.

Individuals who are applying for admission to second degree studies (Zweitstudium), i.e. are already holding a degree in another subject from a university or university of applied sciences in Germany at the time they submit their application, will only compete against other applicants who are already holding a degree. These applicants will not be admitted based on the average grade of their higher education entrance qualification. The only factors that will be taken into consideration are the reasons for which they seek admission to second degree studies as well as the grade of their first degree. Applicants will earn points based on these two criteria. The admission policy for second degree studies of hochschulstart.de in Dortmund shall apply mutatis mutandis.

Please note:

If you want to invoke scientific reasons for pursuing a second degree in medicine, dentistry or pharmacy when you submit an application for admission to hochschulstart.de, you will have to obtain an opinion (in German called Hochschulgutachten) from the University of Würzburg (postal address: Universität Würzburg, Studierendenkanzlei, Sanderring 2, 97070 Würzburg, Germany). You must request that opinion

  • by 10 December (for summer intake) or
  • by 15 June (for winter intake).

1. Grade of first degree

ausgezeichnet (outstanding) or sehr gut (excellent): 4 points

gut (good) or vollbefriedigend (fully satisfactory): 3 points
befriedigend (satisfactory): 2 points

ausreichend (sufficient): 1 point

2. Reasons for which admission to second degree studies is sought

Category 1 - compelling professional reasons -

You need two degrees to be able to work in the profession of your choice: 9 points

Category 2 - scientific or scholarly reasons -

There are scientific or scholarly reasons for which it makes sense for you to complete a second degree. You want to obtain a position in science or research and, for that reason, want to obtain an additional academic qualification in another subject based on your previous work in academia and the professional world:

  • 7 points if the scientific or scholarly reasons are substantial and your scientific or scholarly background confirms the existence of such reasons.
  • 9 points if the scientific or scholarly reasons are very substantial and your past accomplishments confirm the existence of such reasons.
  • 11 points if the reasons are of outstanding scientific or scholarly importance and of particular general interest and your outstanding accomplishments confirm the existence of such reasons.

Category 3 - special professional reasons -

The second degree usefully complements your first degree and, for that reason, will considerably enhance your job prospects. Special professional reasons will not be considered to exist if you merely want to change professions: 7 points

Category 4 - other professional reasons -

The second degree does not usefully complement your first degree, however, there are other reasons for which the second degree will considerably enhance your job prospects: 4 points

Category 5 - other reasons -

None of the above reasons: 1 point

International applicants WITHOUT a German citizenship and WITHOUT the German "Abitur" can find further Information here.

Three percent of places on each programme are reserved for applicants holding a professional qualification that grants access to higher education. These places will be allocated according to the grade achieved in the final vocational training examination or, respectively, the grade achieved in the master craftsman’s or comparable diploma (Meister, Fachwirt, Techniker, etc.).

Important information: Holders of a professional qualification granting access to higher education will not be considered for admission until they have consulted with an advisor. They will thus be required to submit a letter confirming that they have attended an advising session and that their qualification constitutes a general higher education entrance qualification or that they are eligible for consideration for a probationary study period along with their application for admission.

More information

Two percent of places on each programme are reserved for applicants who are members of a squad (see list below) of a national sports federation that is a member of the German Olympic Sports Confederation.

  • Olympiakader (OK) squad
  • Perspektivkader (PK) squad
  • Ergänzungskader (EK) squad
  • Nachwuchskader 1 (NK 1) squad

These places will be allocated according to the average grade of the applicants’ higher education entrance qualification.

More Information about the main quotas

8. Level of qualification

The level of qualification is the average grade of your university entrance qualification, e.g. B. the general university entrance qualification.

9. Places allocated according to criteria set by the University

From the 2024 summer semester onwards, this quota will take into account not only the average grade of the applicants’ higher education entrance qualification but, for some degree programmes, also other selection criteria, which have been set out in the regulations governing those programmes. The number of waitlisted semesters accumulated by applicants will no longer be considered.

In the Academic Speech and Language Therapy programme (Bachelor of Science), an applicant’s ranking in the admissions process will be calculated solely on the basis of the average grade of their higher education entrance qualification.

In the Biochemistry programme (Bachelor of Science), the criteria that will be taken into account when calculating an applicant’s ranking in the admissions process are the average grade of their higher education entrance qualification and, in addition, the individual grades they have achieved at school in chemistry, biology, physics and mathematics. Those individual grades can earn applicants a bonus of up to 0.3 points in total on the average grade of their higher education entrance qualification.

Applicants can receive the following bonuses per subject:

  • Chemistry: Excellent achievements (grade 1 or >12 points) will earn applicants a bonus of 0.2 points. Good achievements (grade 2 or >9 points) will earn applicants a bonus of 0.1 points.
  • Biology, physics and mathematics: Excellent achievements (grade 1 or >12 points) will earn applicants a bonus of 0.1 points.

If an applicant’s higher education entrance qualification certificate states more than one grade/point score for a subject (e.g. a midterm grade and the grade achieved on their school leaving exam), the average of those grades/point scores will be calculated for that subject and used to determine the bonus the applicant will receive.

Applicants decide which of the subjects stated above they want to be considered by entering the grades/point scores achieved in the respective subjects on the application portal.

In the Biomedicine programme (Bachelor of Science), the criteria that will be taken into account when calculating an applicant’s ranking in the admissions process are the average grade of their higher education entrance qualification and, in addition, the individual grades they have achieved at school in two STEM subjects as well as vocational qualifications in fields relevant to the programme. Individual grades and vocational qualifications can earn applicants a bonus of up to 0.5 points in total on the average grade of their higher education entrance qualification.

When allocating places on the Bachelor’s programme in Psychology to applicants according to criteria set by the University, the University of Würzburg will take into account the result applicants have achieved in the BaPsy-DGPs aptitude test (weighted 40%) in addition to the average grade of their higher education entrance qualification (weighted 60%).

An applicant’s ranking in the admissions process will then be calculated using the score they achieve through the grade of their higher education entrance qualification (highest achievable score: 100 points) and the percentile rank of their BaPsy-DGPs test score. You can read the exact procedure for calculating the score in Appendix 3 of the Hochschulzulassungssatzung.

More information in German about when the BaPsy-DGPs test will be held, by when you will have to sign up, who the test is for, what material it covers and what fee is being charged can be found on the website of the German Psychological Society (DGPs).

Taking the test is voluntary and is not a prerequisite for admission to the programme. However, we would advise everyone interested in studying the Bachelor’s programme in Psychology to take the test in order to improve their chances of admission.

If you are seeking admission under the quota of places reserved for applicants applying for admission to second degree studies or under the quota of places reserved for applicants holding a professional qualification that grants access to higher education, the JMU will not take the result of the BaPsy-DGPs aptitude test into account.

For more information in German, you can also refer to the web pages of the Course Advisory Service for the Psychology programme.

Applicants who, at the time of the application deadline on 15 July, have completed at least six months of a service referred to in Art. 2 of the Bavarian higher education admissions act (Bayerisches Hochschulzulassungsgesetz, BayHZG) will receive a bonus of 0.3 points on the average grade of their higher education entrance qualification.
