Contributions to JMU's history

The Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg is one of the oldest universities in Germany. The university's founding in 1402 was the fourth in the territory of present-day Germany, and today JMU is the tenth oldest continuously existing university in the Federal Republic.

The publication series of the University Archives is dedicated to the reappraisal of this history. One focus is on the history of the early 20th century, since neither the period of the Third Reich nor the effects of the First World War on the University of Würzburg have been systematically studied to date. The source situation here is quite favorable, especially for the beginning of the 20th century, which was a heyday of scientific research at the Alma Julia.

The Revocation of the Doctoral Degree at the University of Würzburg 1933-1945

184 academics at the University of Würzburg were unlawfully deprived of their doctorate between 1933 and 1945. Above all, academics of Jewish origin were to be disparaged in this way.

Connecting the perceptible with the imperceptible, such as the values and tasks of institutions - that is the task of lordly insignia. Since their first founding in the 12th century, universities, too, have represented a ruling authority and, as such, have striven to present themselves to the outside world.
