Advanced study programmes and certificates in the field of sustainability
The University of Würzburg (JMU) offers a wide range of courses, degree programmes and certificates relating to sustainability and education for sustainable development (ESD). These programmes aim to equip students from all disciplines with the knowledge and skills they need to play an active role in shaping a sustainable future.
Study programmes with a focus on sustainability
JMU offers several degree programmes that focus on subject-specific aspects of sustainability:
- B. Sc. Informatik und Nachhaltigkeit (Information technology and sustainability): This interdisciplinary degree programme, which is unique in Germany, combines a profound education in computer science with the acquisition of skills that enable students to contribute to a sustainable economy with innovative and solution-oriented approaches.
- M. Sc. Sozialwissenschaftliche Nachhaltigkeitsforschung (Social science sustainability research): This degree programme is aimed at students who wish to expand their knowledge of the social sciences with a focus on the multi-layered and complex topic of sustainability research with interdisciplinary research approaches.
- CHARM-EU-M. Sc. in Global Challenges for Sustainability: From 2025, students in this programme, which is supported by a consortium of nine European universities, will be able to deal with questions of sustainable development in a transdisciplinary and challenge-based manner and become part of an intercultural co-creation and innovation process.
- M.A. Environmental Humanities: In the future, this programme will focus on the principles and practices of the humanities in relation to environmental problems. Students will explore methods of representation and learn to critically evaluate concepts, historical developments and narrative patterns in response to environmental crises.
Certificates with sustainability reference
Students can acquire various sustainability-related certificates to accompany their degree programme:
- Globale Systeme und interkulturelle Kompetenz (Global systems and intercultural competence): The GSiK project offers interdisciplinary events to develop intercultural skills and information on sustainability, with the opportunity to acquire certificates confirming commitment in these areas.
- Bildung, Ökologie und Nachhaltigkeit (Education, ecology and sustainability:): The ‘Education, Ecology and Sustainability’ certificate promotes a responsible attitude towards ecological issues through flexible course selection, practical commitments and interdisciplinary learning.
- Digital competences and sustainability (in planning): The aim of this programme will be to teach digital skills such as AI, programming and data analysis in such a way that students from all faculties can use them to promote sustainability.

- The Career Centre facilitates intercultural experiences in the context of sustainability through the Climate Virtual Exchange (CliVEx) format.
