Courses with a sustainability focus

In order to prepare the anchoring of education for sustainable development (ESD) as a cross-sectional task in all degree programmes and to make the diverse activities that already exist visible, JMU began systematically recording all courses with a sustainability focus for the first time in the winter semester 2024/25.

Criteria for courses with a sustainability focus

A course is considered sustainability-related if it fulfils at least one of the following criteria:

  1. Thematisation of sustainability perspectives: General or subject-specific perspectives on the principle of sustainability are thematised and discussed. This enables students to categorise the theory and practice of their subject in a comprehensive ecological, social and economic context in relation to sustainability.
  2. Promotion of participation: The course develops design skills in the sense of ESD. Students are thus enabled to actively participate in shaping social, economic and technical change in terms of sustainable development.
  3. Teaching didactic ESD skills: The course enables the acquisition of didactic knowledge and skills for teaching ESD knowledge and competences. This is particularly relevant for students on teacher training programmes and others who will be working in educational contexts.

Diverse programme at the JMU

This preliminary survey has shown that JMU already offers a wide range of sustainability-related courses. In the winter semester 2024/25, students can acquire knowledge about various aspects of sustainability, ESD-relevant design skills or didactic methods for ESD in around 140 courses from all 10 faculties. In order to provide students, prospective students and the public with easy access to information about the sustainability-related courses on offer, these courses are listed separately in the JMU course catalogue.

To the course catalogue (WueStudy)

JMU is continuously working on expanding and improving its range of sustainability-related courses and documenting this in the course catalogue.
