Further training for lecturers in the area of ESD

University didactics subject certificate ‘Higher education for sustainable development’

The certificate programme „Hochschulbildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung“ (HBNE; eng. Higher Education for Sustainable Development’) supports JMU lecturers in getting to know the concept of education for sustainable development, reflecting on its possibilities and limitations and integrating sustainability-related content into university teaching practice in a methodically well thought-out way.

Over the course of the programme, participants are encouraged to explore ESD from a scientific perspective, reflect on the specific challenges of implementing it at universities, cultivate a greater understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and try out teaching and learning methods that encourage critical, reflective thinking and responsible action.

Programme structure

The programme is divided into four modules, each covering different but complementary areas.

Module 1: Scientific perspectives on sustainability

As part of a series of lectures, experts from various disciplines are regularly invited to present current research finding and solvings to the SDGs.

The topics range from the importance of planetary boundaries and biodiversity management to the sustainable use of resources and social inclusion. The lectures offer a good opportunity to deal with global challenges from an interdisciplinary perspective and to deepen one's own knowledge of sustainable solutions and their feasibility in different contexts.

The events are organised by Teaching4Sustainability (WueLAB).

Module 2: University Didactics and Methodology

This module focuses on didactic methods and approaches in higher education for sustainable development. Specific teaching methods and concepts are taught in the courses, such as problem-based learning or service learning, which help to involve students more actively in the course. Another focus is on the critical reflection of the diverse demands of ESD on lecturers.

Th events are organised by ProfiLehre (ZBL).

Module 3: Development of your own teaching project

During the course of the programme, participants design their own teaching project that is tailored to the specific requirements of their discipline and their students. This may involve the integration of sustainability-related topics into existing courses or the development of new formats that incorporate transdisciplinary approaches or cooperation with regional partners (NGOs, companies), for example.

Module 4: Portfolio reflection

All new experiences are documented in a personal portfolio that is created via the Mahara platform. This portfolio not only serves to reflect on the content, but can also be used in the long term as proof of professional and personal development in the field of ESD.

ProfiLehre advises the participants throughout the entire process and supports them in realising their project and creating the portfolio.

The flexible structure of the programme allows teachers to adapt the programme to their individual needs and time constraints. The courses can be completed in different time periods and sequences, so that teachers with heavy time commitments also have the opportunity to actively participate in the programme.
