MSc Computational Humanities (2024)

In the winter semester 2025, the Master of Science Computational Humanities will be introduced as a joint program of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science (Institute of Computer Science). It will no longer be possible to enrol on the old Master of Arts Digital Humanities.

The interdisciplinary subject of Computational Humanities provides a sound knowledge of the application of computer-aided methods and the systematic use of digital resources in the humanities and cultural studies. It is offered as a research-oriented degree program as part of a consecutive Bachelor’s and Master’s degree model.

The course is currently in the final planning phase. The relevant documents (subject-specific regulations, module handbook, etc.) are expected to be published in the next few weeks. As preliminary information until then:

Planning status for the course of study

It will be possible to attend the MSc as a single-subject Master’s degree with 120 ECTS (incl. Master’s thesis and colloquium) or as a double-major Master’s degree with 45 ECTS (Master’s thesis and colloquium are then added with 30 ECTS in one of the chosen subjects or in combination). The language of instruction and examination is English. The diagram shows an overview of the planned course of study.

Planning status of the admission requirements

The Master’s degree is explicitly intended as a research-oriented course for students who already have previous knowledge of Digital Humanities to the extent of a Bachelor’s degree. The following are expected:

  • a completed Bachelor’s degree (180 ECTS)
  • Previous knowledge in the field of Digital Humanities (at least 60 ECTS), such as can be acquired in our BA Digital Humanities degree programs, always including
    • 10 ECTS mathematics
    • 5 ECTS programming
    • 5 ECTS machine learning
  • previous knowledge from a subject in humanities or cultural sciences (at least 20 ECTS)

Students who wish to switch to the MSc after completing the BA should therefore attend Introduction to Advanced Mathematics 1 and 2 in particular. Of course, this is also possible if the course is not included in your degree program.
