EORC Talk: Climate Change-Related Research and Capacity Development in West Africa

13.11.2024

The Earth Observation Research Cluster (EORC) and the NetCDA project invite you to the next EORC Talk that will address climate change-related research and capacity development in West Africa on November 20th at 2:00 pm.

Four speakers from the WASCAL Directorate and three universities in West Africa, namely the University of The Gambia, The Federal University of Technology in Minna, Nigeria, and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, will provide insights into their research activities focusing on human habitats, land use and its adaptation to climate change, and scientific output.

The EORC Talk will be given in presence at the EORC (John-Skilton-Str. 4a) on Wednesday, November 20th, starting at 02 p.m. sharp.

We look forward to seeing you and having an interesting joint discussion.

Climate Change-Related Research and Capacity Development in West Africa

Climate change research in West Africa is crucial due to the region's vulnerability to climate-related impacts, such as droughts, floods, and desertification. These environmental changes threaten food security, as agriculture is a primary livelihood for many communities. Understanding the local climate patterns and their variations helps to develop adaptive strategies to mitigate these impacts. Additionally, climate change research informs policymaking, enabling governments and organizations to implement effective measures for sustainable development. Ultimately, addressing climate change in West Africa is essential for protecting ecosystems, enhancing resilience, and ensuring the well-being of its populations.

The West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL, https://wascal.org) is a long-term partner in research and academia of the University of Würzburg. For more than ten years, WASCAL has contributed to knowledge creation and capacity development on climate-related topics in West Africa. In this talk, we will learn more about the Doctoral Research supported by WASCAL and carried out on Land Use or Urban Areas under Climate Change at three Universities across West Africa: Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST; Kumasi, Ghana); Federal University of Technology Minna (FUT Minna, Nigeria) and University of the Gambia (UTG, The Gambia).
