The People’s Republic of China invests heavily in the upgrade of its national system of innovation. A unique combination of policies aims at establishing Chinese enterprises at the forefront of global technological developments. One area where Chinese enterprises have been highly innovative and successful is financial technology including internet-based financial services (fintech). Yet a closer look at China’s ‘fintech explosion’ offers some important insights into the specifics of the politics of regulation and innovation in a sector that developed rapidly outside the official policy framework and is today facing a diversified strategy of the party-state to consolidate and develop.
