The Bartfeld lab is interested in host-microbe interactions at the epithelial lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Here, epithelial cells function as a physical and immunological barrier between the microbes of the gut and the body. To model the interactions, we use gastrointestinal organoids. They are generated from adult epithelial stem cells from patient samples or from laboratory animals. Organoids are 3-dimensional mini-versions of the original organ. They contain stem cells as well as differentiated cells, which organize themselves around a central lumen. In this project, we analyze the innate immune response of organoids to microbe-derived components.
