The People’s Republic of China invests heavily in the upgrade of its national system of innovation. A unique combination of policies aims at establishing Chinese enterprises at the forefront of global technological developments. One area where Chinese enterprises have been highly innovative and successful is financial technology including internet-based financial services (fintech). Yet a closer look at China’s ‘fintech explosion’ offers some important insights into the specifics of the politics of regulation and innovation in a sector that developed rapidly outside the official policy framework and is today facing a diversified strategy of the party-state to consolidate and develop.

Jörn-Carsten Gottwald, is Chair for East Asian Politics at Ruhr University Bochum. He held positions at Free University Berlin, the University of Trier and the University College Cork, Ireland, and has been a visiting professor at Fudan University Shanghai and National Cheng-chi University, Taipei. He has published on European China policies, the politics of financial regulation and China’s political economy. His current research centers on issues in financial regulation and innovation in China and Europe and the changing dynamics in bilateral relations.
