Guest Lectures (About Physical Chemistry, English Linguistics and Theoretical Physics)

Spectroscopy in the spotlight: intense scrutiny of material secrets; Native-language speech processing in the perception of non-native language speech; Which way will the train go? Decoding the Universe at the largest and the smallest scales
Datum: 20.06.2024, 18:00 - 20:00 Uhr
Vortragende: Prof. Dr. Jacob Krich, Prof. Dr. John Matthews and Prof. Dr. Arnab Kundu

In the SCIAS guest lectures, the visiting professors and their hosts of the university introduce themselves and their research areas in the lecture hall of the Welz house to fellow guests, hosts and an interested audience of the university and the city in short 20-minute keynote lectures. Afterwards, all the participants have the opportunity to discuss and learn more about the respective projects and research areas to promote international and interdisciplinary exchange, dialogue and cooperation.

Speakers:

  • Prof. Dr. Jacob Krich (University of Ottawa, Canada): Spectroscopy in the spotlight: intense scrutiny of material secrets
  • Prof. Dr. John Matthews (Chuo University, Japan): Native-language speech processing in the perception of non-native language speech
  • Prof. Dr. Arnab Kundu (Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, India): Which way will the train go? Decoding the Universe at the largest and the smallest scales

Prof. Dr. Jacob Krich is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Ottawa, in Canada. He is staying at Welz-Haus as a guest of Prof. Tobias Brixner of the Institut für Physikalische und Theoretische Chemie. He is a theoretical physicist with research focusing on design and interpretation of nonlinear spectroscopies and on high-efficiency photovoltaics.

Prof. Dr. John Matthews is Professor of Linguistics at Chuo University in Tokyo (Japan) where he investigates the psycholinguistic mechanisms involved in processing non-native language speech by bilinguals and second language learners. He is staying at Welz-Haus for the summer term as the guest of Prof. Dr. Barış Kabak of the Neuphilologisches Institut. During his stay he is developing experimental materials for use in a new series of studies examining the processing of speech among Japanese speakers of German both in Germany and in Japan, benefitting richly from the linguistics community at Würzburg.

Prof. Dr. Arnab Kundu is a Professor at the Theory Division of Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics in Kolkata, India. He will be staying at the Welz house for three months during May-July of 2024 as a Humboldt Fellow and as a guest of Prof. Dr. Johanna Erdmenger at the Theoretical Physics III, Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Wuerzburg. He grew up in India, obtained his doctoral education and post-doctoral training in the USA and Europe before going back to India for a career in research. He is now actively involved in understanding the quantum aspects of gravity, especially of black holes and its ramifications to ideas of quantum chaos and quantum information theory.

The presentation and the following discussion are open to the public and will be held in English. All interested parties are welcome!
